7 Trumpets for Today

                                                                                                                                                                November 16, 2011

Dear Friends,

I am writing this introductory letter to all who read the following article on my current insights on the seven trumpets of Revelation 8-11, and also the result of my study of Daniel 12. I do not claim these insights to be exhaustive, but an overview which will stimulate prayerful study and further discovery.

Since September 11, 2001, I have written a number of articles on the topic of the seven trumpets. Soon after the falling of the towers in New York City, God began to reveal to me the meaning of the trumpets for our time. I do not mean to imply that I am in disagreement with our historic view of the trumpets. But in harmony with Ellen White’s statements that “The Bible has accumulated and bound up its treasures for the last generation” (3 SM 339), and that we are to “Study Revelation in connection with Daniel, for history will be repeated” (TM 116), I felt that God had a message in the trumpets for those who will live to see Jesus come.

When I posed my question to God about these things, He impressed me, “You will know when it happens.” So when the towers came down, I went immediately to 9 T. chapter 1, and read Ellen White’s prophetic dream of that occurrence. From that time on, the Lord began to open the Scriptures to me which applied to the trumpets for the final generation. By early 2002, I wrote my first article on the subject, outlining the events that I believed would happen in accordance with the trumpet outline. I shared these insights with several well-known scholars and authors, but none saw light in the possibility of a present application of the trumpets.

Ten years have come and gone, and we are now in a time of unprecedented challenges for the world and its inhabitants. During these years I have watched the countdown of the trumpets, just as the Lord gave them to me in 2001. Many others see the countdown, but do not recognize them as trumpets. But it is important to understand the prophetic outline of the trumpets, because we are called to be watchmen on the walls of Zion, and the trumpets give us the time of the night and where we are in the stream of time and the closeness of Jesus’ coming!

Because the trumpet outline indicates that the time is drawing near for the Sunday-law movement, and because the Papacy is already pushing for more world power and leadership, especially in economic matters, and also for a common family rest day, I feel compelled to share more openly the trumpet outline as God gave them to me, to help alert God’s people to the nearness of the things that have been prophesied. We as a people have long been looking for the Sunday law to bring about the latter rain and the preaching of the loud cry. But many who put off their preparation until that time will find that they   have waited too long, and are among those who do not have the extra oil in their lamps.

So I hope you will consider carefully the time element of the trumpets, and where we are in that time line. The message of the trumpets is that we have no time to lose! The message of the trumpets is that we are most assuredly in the last generation, and that we will soon see Jesus coming in the clouds of heaven. Oh, may we not be found wanting in that day!

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                FURTHER INSIGHTS ON THE TRUMPETS

Before Jesus left this earth and went back to heaven, He comforted His disciples by telling them that He would still be with them through the Holy Spirit, and that He would keep them abreast of everything they needed to know. Because of Jesus’ presence with the Father, He would be continually revealing to His children on earth whatever He learned at the Father’s right hand.

“Now I am going to Him who sent me…. But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you…. When He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.” John 16:5-15.

“I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” John 15:15.

“The Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you…. I have told you now before it happens, so that when it happens, you will believe.” John 14:26, 29.

Surely the Sovereign Lord does nothing without revealing His plan to His servants the prophets.” Amos 3:7.

These texts give us the assurance that God will not spring anything upon His people. He has promised to give us whatever we need to know to keep abreast of God’s dealings with mankind in every age. All things are written down in the Scripture, but not all things are understood by each generation. God’s light is progressive. Whatever each generation needs to understand for their time and experience in order to understand the present truth for their times, Jesus will give them through the Holy Spirit. That is why truth builds upon truth as the centuries go by, and why even the prophets studied the writings of the prophets who had gone before them, to understand the fulfillment of those prophecies for their own day. (See Daniel 9:2.)

“The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day (until the perfect day – KJV).” Pr. 4:18.

In other words, God’s light is progressive until the time comes when the final generation will have received all the light they need to prepare them to meet Jesus without seeing death. Jesus will have revealed everything to them that He has received from His Father for them, and they have seen, accepted, and lived by that advancing light.

“For His church in every generation God has a special truth and a special work.” COL 78.

In every age there is a new development of truth, a message of God to the people of that generation.” COL 127.

So what does all this information have to do with us? For those who have been watching the countdown of events since the towers fell in September, 2001, few can help but believe that these events are telling us something about the need for preparing for Jesus to come. As an example, my daughter, Karen, asked a young woman at her workplace who wears spiked hair, many earrings, etc., and lives with her boyfriend, “What do you think about all the things that have been happening in the world lately?” The young lady replied, “I think it means that God is coming soon, and I am not ready. I think He could come in less than five years!”

In other words, people are noticing around the world that we are living in momentous, perhaps even ominous, times. And what are we as Adventists doing about it? Don’t we have a special truth, a special work, and a special message for our generation? Or are we afraid to speak out because of our memories of shame from the disappointment of 1844, and from other times when we thought the Lord would surely come in that generation? Woe unto us if we let these things deter us from seeing that the end is near, even at the doors. What will arouse the sleeping virgins to their present opportunities to preach the final warning message to this generation?

Are we to wait until the fulfillment of the prophecies of the end before we say anything concerning them? Of what value will our words be then? Shall we wait until God’s judgments fall upon the transgressor before we tell him how to avoid them? Where is our faith in the word of God? Must we see things foretold come to pass before we will believe what He has said? In clear, distinct rays light has come to us, showing that the great day of the Lord is near at hand, ‘even at the doors.’ Let us read and understand before it is too late.” 9 T 20.

Incidentally, this quotation was taken from the chapter directly following the chapter called, “The Last Crisis,” in which Ellen White describes her dream about the falling of the New York towers. This chapter, “Called to be Witnesses,” begins thus:

In a special sense Seventh-day Adventists have been set in the world as watchmen and light bearers. To them has been entrusted the last warning for a perishing world. On them is shining wonderful light from the word of God. They have been given a work of the most solemn import—the proclamation of the first, second, and third angels’ messages. There is no other work of so great importance. They are to allow nothing else to absorb their attention.

The most solemn truths ever entrusted to mortals have been given us to proclaim to the world. The proclamation of these truths is to be our work. The world is to be warned, and God’s people are to be true to the trust committed to them…. Christ says of His people: ‘Ye are the light of the world.’ It is not a small matter that the counsels and plans of God have been so clearly opened to us. It is a wonderful privilege to be able to understand the will of God as revealed in the sure word of prophecy. This places on us a heavy responsibility to impart to others the knowledge that He has given us. It is His purpose that divine and human instrumentalities shall unite in the proclamation of the warning message.” 9 T 19.

Recently I have heard several men and women of renown who are recognized for their preaching, teaching and writing abilities, state that we cannot know whether this is the last generation or not, or whether our world and economy will stabilize and that we will continue forward into the future. If we believe this, can we give the trumpet a certain sound? Can we respond to the hearts crying out for light whom God is impressing right now like my daughter’s coworker?

With that in mind, let me review once again the countdown of the present-day fulfillment of the trumpets which I have suggested in the previous article, as God impressed upon my mind and heart in 2001, after the fall of the NY towers. (I am including the dates of those that have since been fulfilled):

#1. Winds of strife begin to be let go (See Jer. 4: 5-7; 11-14). Fulfillment: NY Towers fall; War with Iraq begins 9/11/01.  #2. Natural disasters. Fulfillment: Tsunami’s, earthquakes, hurricanes in late 2004, early 2005.   #3. Fall of America. Fulfillment: Economy falls in September, 2008.  #4. Sunday laws. Sealing of the Remnant. No more spiritual light coming from other churches.  Beginning of fulfillment: Papal push for Sunday laws in EU in fall of 2010. Germany capitulates. July 15, 2011, N. Dakota capitulates. Beginning on June 28, 2012, these “family rest-day” issues will be advanced in special meetings which will be held in Hawaii.  #5. War with Islam. Only the Remnant who have the seal of God are protected (Rev. 9:4).  #6. Escalating war; probation closes; plagues fall.  #7. Second Coming of Jesus.

Do you wonder if the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy support a last-generation application of the seven Trumpets? Consider these quotations:

The seven angels stood before God to receive their commission. To them was given seven trumpets. The Lord was going forth to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity, and the earth was to disclose her blood and no more cover her slain.” 15 MR 219; Maranatha 284.

Note: Ellen White is here quoting Isa. 26:21. Combined with verse 20, it reads:

“Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast. For, behold, the LORD cometh out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.”

In every instance where Ellen White uses this quotation, she points forward to the time when Jesus calls His people forth to escape the seven last plagues, as does also the Bible Commentaries:

“Indignation. That is, God against His enemies. God’s final ‘indignation’ takes the form of what is known as the seven last plagues (Rev. 14:10; 15:1 [also see 5-8]).”

Notice the similarity of the wording in Revelation 18:4:

Come out of her, my people, so that you will not receive any of her plagues; for her sins are piled up to heaven, and God has remembered her crimes.”

This would indicate that the seven trumpets are God’s final call to the inhabitants of the earth to escape the final wrath of God and prepare for His coming. I believe they lead into the loud cry, as I will address later in this study.

#1.The first angel sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled down upon the earth.” Rev. 8:7.

“In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people…. I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke…. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Act. 2:17-21.

“I am pained at my very heart;… I cannot hold my peace, because thou hast heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.” Jer. 4:19, 20. This text is significantly quoted in 9 T. pg. 15, in the chapter containing the prophecy about the falling of the NY towers (see pages 11-14). As we all know, America has been at war since that day. For further interesting concepts, read Jer. 4:5-29, which are obviously speaking about last-day events; also Deut. 28:49, 50.

#2.The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned into blood, a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and third of the ships were destroyed.” Rev. 8:8, 9.

I am against you, O destroying mountain, you who destroy the whole earth, declares the Lord. I will stretch out my hand against you, roll you off the cliffs, and make you a burned-out mountain…. Lift up a banner among the nations! Blow the trumpet among the nations!” Jer. 51:25-27.

When a trumpet sounds in a city, do not the people tremble? When disaster comes to a city, has not the LORD caused it? Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing without revealing His plan to His servants the prophets. The lion has roared – who will not fear? The Sovereign LORD has spoken – who can but prophesy? ” Amos 3:6-8.

Note: Our church has received a message in Revelation 10:11, that after the disappointment of 1844, we “must prophesy again before many peoples, nations, languages and kings.” It would seem that since the whole world is hearing the sound of these trumpets since 9/11, this is an opportune time to preach the three angels’ messages as never before, with the additional message of the loud cry, “Come out of her, my people,..so that you will not receive any of her plagues.” We should have a distinctive message of warning for the world that will interpret these happenings as messages from God for the purpose of  calling men and women to escape the wrath that is coming upon the wicked during the plagues. If we do not speak out the truth, we leave people with only Satan’s interpretation of these things.

“Satan has control of all whom God does not especially guard…. He will bring disease and disaster, until populous cities are reduced to ruin and desolation…. These visitations are to become more and more frequent and disastrous…. And then the great deceiver will persuade men that those who serve God are causing these evils.” GC 589, 590.

Seek the Lord and live,… Who calls for the waters of the sea, and pours them out over the face of the land—the LORD is His name—He flashes destruction on the stronghold and brings the fortified city to ruin.” Amos 5:6-9.

“The Lord, the LORD Almighty, He who touches the earth and it melts,… Who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out over the face of the land—the LORD is His name.” Amos 9:5, 6.

“The LORD has a charge to bring against you who live in the land: ‘There is no faithfulness, no love, no acknowledgment of God in the land. There is only cursing, lying and murder, stealing and adultery; they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed. Because of this…the beasts of the field and the birds of the air and the fish of the sea are dying.” Hos. 4:1-3.

“The earth itself is convulsed, the ground heaves and swells like the waves of the sea, great fissures appear, and sometimes cities, villages, and burning mountains are swallowed up. These wonderful manifestations will be more and more frequent and terrible, just before the 2nd coming of Christ, and the end of the world, as signs of its speedy destruction…. Since the flood, fire as well as water has been God’s agent to destroy wicked cities. These judgments are sent, that those who lightly regard God’s law and trample upon His authority, may be led to tremble before His power, and to confess His just sovereignty.” PP 109.

God is speaking to us in these last days. We hear His voice in the storm, in the rolling thunder. We hear of calamities He permits in the earthquakes, the breaking forth of waters, and the destructive elements sweeping all before them…. God speaks to families who have refused to recognize Him, sometimes in the whirlwind and storm.” 2 SM 315.

Already the judgments of God are in the land, as seen in storms, in floods, and tempests, in earthquakes, in peril by land and by sea. The great I AM is speaking to those who make void His law. When God’s wrath is poured out upon the earth, who will then be able to stand?” 5 T 136.

#3. The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water – the name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.” Rev. 8:10, 11.

Note: I asked the Lord in 2001 when He was opening up to me the meaning of the trumpets for our day, “What is the falling star?” The Holy Spirit impressed me that it was America, and that the fall would come during the tenure of President Bush. On Sabbath morning, September 13, 2008, while I was sitting in Sabbath School, the Lord impressed me with these words: “The descent has begun. Do not be afraid! I will be with you and hold your hand and guide you.” The very next day, Fannie May and Freddie Mac went down, and the following day, several large businesses, such as banks, insurance companies, etc., also collapsed. The rest is history.

I believe the cryptic description of this falling star describes America very well. First of all, stars in the Bible represent leaders, and America has been the leader of nations for many years. But the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy predict its moral and economic fall. However, even as it goes down, it is depicted as a blazing torch, indicating that even during its fall, America will still retain leadership influence. Notice the context of the words used in this passage, using the NIV Concordance:

Torch (#3286) – lamp, lantern, torch.  Root word:  #3290 – to give light, shine, lights up.

Fell (#4406) – to fall, collapse, bow down; to die, drop out, fell to the ground.

As sad as these words may be for our beloved country, it is the result of turning away from the light shining from heaven from God’s people who will be giving God’s final message of love to a dying world. That is why moral darkness follows in the 4th trumpet, which is a result of our country and the other nations of the world following the leadership of the Papacy as it becomes once again for a short time the little horn power of Daniel 7 and 8, and Revelation 13.

It is interesting that monetary systems have been affected when the Papacy is in the ascendancy. Squalor, poverty, and misery were abundant during the dark ages. The age of enlightenment began after the 1260 year period ended in 1798. Then, with the signing of the Lateran Treaty on February 11, 1929, the Vatican was once again recognized as a sovereign state. On October 24-29 of that year, the stock market fell, and the great depression began. In April and May of 2008, the Pope visited America and was lauded by President and people. On September 14, and 15, the collapse of the market began. Notice these predictions of market collapse when God searches, or judges, those who claim to be His people and finds them to be complacent and self-sufficient:

“I will sweep away everything from the face of the earth, declares the LORD. I will sweep away both men and animals; I will sweep away the birds of the air and the fish of the sea…. I will cut off from this place every remnant of Baal, the names of the pagan and the idolatrous priests—…. those who turn back from following the LORD and neither seek the LORD nor inquire of Him….

“On that day, declares the LORD, a cry will go up from the Fish Gate, wailing from the New Quarter, and loud crash from the hills. [These are all descriptions of the destruction of the market places of Jerusalem by the invading Babylonians. See 4 BC 1063, 1064.] Wail, you who live in the market district; all your merchants will be wiped out, all who trade with silver will be ruined. At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish those who are complacent, who are like wine left on its dregs, who think, ‘The LORD will do nothing, either good or bad.’… The great day of the LORD is near—near and coming quickly. Listen! The cry on the day of the LORD will be bitter, the shouting of the warrior there…. A day of trumpet and battle cry against the fortified cities and against the corner towers.” KJV – “A day of trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities and against the high towers.” Zeph. 1:2-16.

“Why has the land been ruined and laid waste like a desert that no man can cross? The LORD said, ‘It is because they have forsaken my law, which I set before them; they have not obeyed me or followed my law…. Therefore, this is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel says: ‘See, I will make this people eat bitter food and drink poisoned water.” Jer. 9:12-15.

“The prophets follow an evil course…. Even in my temple I find their wickedness,’ declares the LORD. ‘Therefore their path will become slippery; they will be banished to darkness and there they will fall…. I will make them eat bitter food and drink poisoned water, because from the prophets of Jerusalem ungodliness has spread throughout the land.”  Jer. 23:10-15.

Note: Because of the false teachings of the popular churches, God will allow the people who love their  pleasing fables to eat and drink the poisoned fare they receive from their pastors and false teachers, and to reap the results, one of which is to see their money devalued, and the marketing system fail.

#4. “The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them turned dark.” Rev. 8:12.

“Woe to you who long for the day of the LORD! Why do you long for the day of the LORD?… Will not the day of the LORD be darkness, not light—pitch dark, without a ray of brightness? I hate, I despise your religious feasts; I cannot stand your assemblies…. Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!” Amos 5:18-24.

Then they will cry out to the LORD, but He will not answer them. At that time He will hide His face from them because of the evil they have done. This is what the LORD says: ‘As for the prophets who lead my people astray, if one feeds them, they proclaim ‘peace’; if he does not, they prepare to wage war against him. Therefore night will come over you, without visions, and darkness without divination. The sun will set for the prophets, and the day will go dark for them. The seers will be ashamed and the diviners disgraced. They will all cover their faces because there is no answer from God. But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the LORD, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression, to Israel his sin.” Micah 3:4-8.

“Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise [lift up – KJV] your voice like a trumpet. Declare to my people their rebellion and to the house of Jacob their sins.” Isa. 58:1.

“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and think darkness is over the peoples, but the LORD rises upon you and His glory appears over you. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising (KJV).”

“For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem’s sake I will not remain quiet, till her righteousness shines out like the dawn, her salvation like a blazing torch. The nations will see your righteousness, and all kings your glory.” Isa. 62:1, 2.

“The coming of the bridegroom was at midnight—the darkest hour. So the coming of Christ will take place in the darkest period of this earth’s history…. The Scriptures pointing forward to this time declare that Satan will work with all power and ‘with all deceivableness of unrighteousness.’ 2 Thess. 2:9, 10. His working is plainly revealed by the rapidly increasing darkness, the multitudinous errors, heresies, and delusions of these last days. Not only is Satan leading the world captive, but his deceptions are leavening the professed churches of our Lord Jesus Christ. The great apostasy will develop into darkness deep as midnight, impenetrable as sackcloth of hair….

But out of that night of darkness God’s light will shine…. To His people He says, ‘Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.’” Isa. 60:2…. At this time a message from God is to be proclaimed, a message illuminating in its influence and saving in its power. His character is to be made known. Into the darkness of the world is to be shed the light of His glory, the light of His goodness, mercy, and truth.” COL 414, 415.

“No one has yet received the mark of the beast. The testing time has not yet come. There are true Christian in every church, not excepting the Catholic communion. None are condemned until they have had the light and have seen the obligation of the fourth commandment. But when the decree shall go forth enforcing the counterfeit Sabbath, and the loud cry of the third angel shall warn men against the worship of the beast and his image, the line will be clearly drawn between the false and the true. Then those who still continue in transgression will receive the mark of the beast.

When Protestant churches shall unite with the secular power to sustain a false religion,.. then will the papal sabbath be enforced by the combined authority of church and state. There will be a national apostasy, which will end only in national ruin.” Ev. 234, 235.

I do hope that the trumpet will give a certain sound in regard to this Sunday-law movement.” CW 97.

“When the watchman seeing the sword coming, gives the trumpet a certain sound…all will have opportunity to make ready for the conflict…. We have been looking for many years for a Sunday law to be enacted in our land; and now that the movement is right upon us,…let the watchmen now lift up their voice and give the message which is present truth for this time. Let us show the people where we are in prophetic history…. God calls upon us to awake, for the end is near. Every passing hour is one of activity in the heavenly courts to make ready a people upon the earth to act a part in the scenes that are soon to open upon us.” 5 T 715, 716.

The Lord will put new, vital force into His work as human agencies obey the command to go forth and proclaim the truth.” 1 SM 201.

“The voice of the true watchman needs now to be heard all along the line; the morning cometh and also the night. The trumpet must give a certain sound for we are in the great day of the Lord’s preparation.” 2 SM 379.

Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound an alarm in the holy mountain. Gather the host of the Lord, with sanctified hearts, to hear what the Lord will say unto His people, for He has increased light for all who hear. Let them be armed and equipped, and come up to the battle – to the help of the Lord against the mighty.” TM 410.

Dear friends, the prophetic clock is ticking, the trumpets of warning have been sounding, and are we, God’s watchmen, giving the trumpet a certain sound? Do we know what time of night it is? We should, if we discern God’s warning messages rightly. It is time for us to prepare to give the Loud Cry of the third angel.

“The work of this angel comes in at the right time to join in the last great work of the third angel’s message as it swells to a loud cry. And the people of God are thus prepared to stand in the hour of temptation, which they are soon to meet. I saw a great light resting upon them, and they united to fearlessly proclaim the third angel’s message.

“Angels were sent to aid the mighty angel from heaven, and I heard voices which seemed to sound everywhere, ‘Come out of her, My people, that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.’ This message seemed to be an addition to the third message, joining it as the midnight cry joined the second angel’s message in 1844.” EW 277.

But there is a preparation of heart and life to be made in order for us to be ready to give this last warning message:

A work must be done for the people, or many will not be prepared to receive the light of the angel sent down from heaven to lighten the whole earth with His glory. Do not think that you will be found as vessels unto honor in the time of the latter rain, to receive the glory of God, if you are lifting up your souls unto vanity, speaking perverse things, and cherishing roots of bitterness.” LS 327, 328.

Friends, I beg you to read the chapter in Early Writings, called, The Shaking, found on pp. 269-273. This short chapter contains a message for us right now. Won’t you join with me in participating with Jesus in this final cleansing work so that you can be ready to preach the last warning message to this world? Then Jesus can come and take us home to be with Him. What a glorious day awaits us, and it is SOON – yes, even at the doors!

Trumpets #5, 6, & 7- Rev. 9, and 11: 15-19 – War, the close of probation, the plagues, and the coming of Jesus – the 3 woes. Throughout Scripture, woes are given as warnings to a generation that is facing the end of their spiritual probation (Examples: Hos. 8:1; Matthew 23). Since these are still future, we will understand them better “as the scroll unrolls”. It is important to note that only those who have received the seal of God before the woes begin will be protected when the winds of strife are released (See Rev. 9:4).

“All who cherish the Lord as their portion in this life will be under His control and will receive the sign, the mark of God, which shows them to be God’s special possession. The Lord protects every human being who bears His sign…. All who love and serve Him are very precious in His sight.” 7 BC 969.

“Now, while our great High Priest is making the atonement for us, we should seek to become perfect in Christ. Not even by a thought could our Savior be brought to yield to the power of temptation…. Satan could find nothing in the Son of God that would enable him to gain the victory. He had kept His Father’s commandments and there was no sin in Him that Satan could use to his advantage. This is the condition in which these must be found who shall stand in the time of trouble.” GC 623.

“The seal of the living God will be placed upon those only who bear a likeness to Christ in character.”      7 BC 970.

“Are we striving with all our power to attain to the stature of men and women in Christ? Are we seeking for His fullness, ever pressing toward the mark set before us – the perfection of His character? When the Lord’s people reach this mark, they will be sealed in their foreheads. Filled with the Spirit, they will be complete in Christ, and the recording angel will declare, ‘It is finished.’” OHC 150.

Thus, when all God’s people are sealed and protected and in the hiding place under the shadow of His wings (see Ps. 32, 46, & 91), the winds of strife will be let loose, and devastation and destruction will fill the earth.

“Already kingdom is rising against kingdom. There is not now a determined engagement. As yet the four winds are held until the servants of God shall be sealed in their foreheads. The powers of earth will marshal their forces for the last great battle. How carefully we should improve the little remaining period of our probation.” R&H Nov. 27, 1900.

Just before we entered it [the time of trouble], we all received the seal of the living God. Then I saw the four angels cease to hold the four winds, and I saw famine, pestilence, and sword, nation rose against nation, and the whole world was in confusion.” 7 BC 968.

“Only a moment of time, as it were, yet remains. But while already nation is rising against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, there is not now a general engagement. As yet the four winds are held until the servants of God shall be sealed in their foreheads. Then the powers of earth will marshal their forces for the last great battle.” 6 T 14.

Angels are now restraining the winds of strife, that they may not blow until the world shall be warned of its coming doom; but a storm is gathering, ready to burst upon the earth; and when God shall bid His angels loose the winds, there will be such a scene of strife as no pen can picture.” Ed. 179, 80. (See sixth trumpet, Rev. 9:13-16.)

How thankful we should be that during this terrible time, God’s people will be protected!

“The fruit of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever. My people will live in peaceful dwelling place, in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest. Though hail flattens the forest and the city is leveled completely….” Isa. 32:17-19.

“I saw that our bread and water will be sure, and that we shall not lack or suffer hunger; for God is able to spread a table before us in the wilderness.” EW 56.

I saw the sword, famine, pestilence, and great confusion in the land. The wicked thought that we had brought the judgments upon them, and they rose up and took counsel to rid the earth of us, thinking that then the evil would be stayed.

“In the time of trouble we all fled from the cities and villages, but were pursued by the wicked, who entered the houses of the saints with a sword to kill us, but it broke, and fell as powerless a straw. Then we all cried day and night for deliverance, and the cry came up before God. The sun came up and the moon stood still…. Dark, heavy clouds came up and clashed against each other. But there was one clear place of settled glory, whence came the voice of God like many waters…. And as God spoke the day and the hour of Jesus’ coming and delivered the covenant to His people,… the saints shouted, ‘Glory! Alleluia!’ Their countenances were lighted up with the glory of God; and they shone with the glory, as did the face of Moses when he came down from Sinai. The wicked could not look on them for the glory. And when the never-ending blessing was pronounced on those who had honored God in keeping His Sabbath holy, there was a mighty shout of victory over the beast and over his image. Then commenced the jubilee, when the land should rest.” EW 34, 35.

“At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory. And He will send His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other. Now learn this less from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” Matt. 24:30-35.

Please notice, that even though we will not know the day or hour of Jesus’ coming (see verses 36 and 42) until the voice of God speaks to His waiting ones just before He appears in the sky, we ARE to know when it is near, right at the door, and that we are in the final generation. And I believe that the present- day trumpets as we have reviewed them should tell us that, as we see the countdown taking place. Up until now, we have, as a people, been looking for the enactment of the national Sunday law to nail down our time frame for the end. But that is the fourth trumpet, and the last one before the terrible woes begin. For many people, waiting this long before beginning to “get serious” about our preparation for Jesus’ coming will be too late, just as it was for the foolish virgins. Sadly, many who thought they would be ready for the time of trouble will have slumbered too long, and while they are scurrying around to purchase the extra oil [the latter rain], the door will be shut.

Before I close this article, I have one more piece of information for your consideration. There is an obscure text which has puzzled many from the beginning of the Advent movement. It is this in Dan. 12:9-12:

“Go your way, Daniel, because the words are closed up and sealed until the time of the end. Many will be purified, made spotless and refined, but the wicked will continue to be wicked. None of the wicked will understand, but the wise will understand.

From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1290 days. Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the end of the 1335 days.”

Some have felt that this section of Daniel cannot be understood and applied directly to the final generation. So before I begin to discuss this final prophecy of Daniel, I would like to introduce these thoughts from PK 547, 548:

“Daniel was honored by God as His ambassador, and was given many revelations of the mysteries of ages to come. His wonderful prophecies, as recorded by him in chapters seven to twelve of the book bearing His name, were not fully understood even by the prophet himself; but before his life labors closed, he was given the blessed assurance that ‘at the end of the days’ – in  the closing period of this world’s history – he would again be permitted to stand in his lot and place….

As we near the close of this world’s history, the prophecies recorded by Daniel demand our special attention, as they relate to the very time in which we are living…. Satan has led many to believe that the prophetic portions of the writings of Daniel and of John the revelator cannot be understood. But the promise is plain that special blessing will accompany the study of these prophecies. ‘The wise shall understand,’ was spoken of the visions of Daniel that were to be unsealed in the latter days; and of the revelation that Christ gave to His servant John for the guidance of God’s people all through the centuries, the promise is, ‘Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein.’” PK 547, 548.

So as we begin this study, we can be assured that the Holy Spirit will guide us into all the truth that is applicable for our time. First, we need to address the issue of decoding this prophecy using the year/day principle. I realize that there are dates that fit this puzzle using the year-day principle of a year for every day of the prophecy. This principle is found in Num. 14:34:

“For forty years – one year for each of the forty days you explored the land – you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.”

Notice that when God is using a disciplinary action to show the cause and effect of a sin or sins, He sets a year for every day of the sin to work out the problem and bring resolution. But when He uses a righteous person to demonstrate the working out of the sin problem, He uses a day for every year. Notice this example in Eze. 4:3-6:

“This will be a sign to the house of Israel. Then lie on your left side and put the sin of the house of Israel upon yourself. You are to bear their sin for the number of days as the years of their sin. So for 390 days you will bear the sin of the house of Israel. After you have finished this, lie down again, this time on your right side, and bear the sin of the house of Judah. I have assigned you 40 days, a day for each year.”

Where do we see this principle being demonstrated again? It is in the life of Jesus, of course. He was in the wilderness for 40 days – a day for every year the Israelites were in the wilderness, and in their place He overcame in every area where they failed. He then began His public ministry, which lasted for 3 ½ years, or approximately 1260 days. After His death and resurrection, His disciples, who were cleansed, filled and empowered by the Holy Spirit, fulfilled the same 3 ½ period, working out the full week which had been prophesied in the first section of the 2300-day prophecy.

Then, as the “man of sin,” began to develop, God gave the Gentiles 1260 years to reveal the working out of the root of sin – “you will be as gods.” At the end of that time period, in 1798, the “time of the end” began. Within 46 years, the final work of Christ in the heavenly Sanctuary was instituted, and all year-for-a-day time prophecies came to a close, for Jesus was preparing His people to be among those who would live through to the end. He was developing a final Remnant, the finished work of redemption, the full and final display of His grace. The timing would be dependent upon the cooperation of His people; therefore there need not be any lengthy time prophecies spanning the centuries. (Notice Hos. 6:1-3.)

“And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven, and sware by Him who liveth forever and ever,..that there should be time no longer: But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as He hath declared to His servants, the prophets.” Rev. 10:5-7.

What is this mystery of God spoken of here? Let us let Paul speak:

“I have become its [the church’s] servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness—the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the saints. To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. We proclaim Him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.” Col. 1:25-28.

In saying this, Paul was reaching out for a goal that would not be completed until the final generation – the 144,000, who are called “firstfruits to God and the Lamb. No lie was found in their mouths; they are blameless.” Rev. 14:4, 5. They have the name (character) of the Father and Son written on their foreheads (verse 1). They are sealed forever, and represent all of mankind as the finished product of the work of Jesus in restoring man back to his original created state of perfect harmony with God.

But now let’s go back to Daniel 12 and the 1290/1335 day prophecy. Notice the setting of this prophecy: “Many will be purified, made spotless and refined, but the wicked will continue to be wicked. None of the wicked will understand, but the wise will understand.” V. 10.

What do the wise understand that the wicked do not? If we are true to the context of the verse, we will conclude that the wicked do not understand how to “be purified, made spotless and refined.” We would also conclude that the wise are those who have the “extra” oil of the Holy Spirit – the latter rain – and are not depending upon the early rain of Pentecost to get them all the way through to the second coming of Jesus, as some Christians do today. The early rain cannot do the work of bringing the harvest to full maturity, as the latter rain must do.

So could we conclude that this prophecy will apply to those at the end of time who have understood, experienced and cooperated with the cleansing of Jesus in the second apartment of the Sanctuary, and are the firstfruits of mankind, representing all who have gone before them who have died in the faith of Jesus?

If that is the case, then what would be the starting point of this prophecy? Let’s read on.

From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1290 days. Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the end of the 1335 days.” Vs 11, 12.

Jesus spoke about the abomination of desolation in Matthew 24:15, 16:

“So when you see standing in the holy place the abomination that causes desolation, spoken of through the prophet Daniel – let the reader understand – then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.”

Here Jesus gives a prophecy in which He covers both the destruction of Jerusalem, and the end of the world. It is a blended prophecy which was intended for both them and us. “The lines cannot always be sharply drawn between the two.” 5 BC 497. But He did say, “Let the reader understand.” V. 15. And understand, they did, for not one Christian was lost when the Roman armies came and destroyed Jerusalem. Interestingly, it was just 3 ½ years from the first siege of Cestius Gallus in the autumn of A.D. 66 (who retreated for some unknown reason), until Titus returned in the spring of 70 AD, and destroyed the city.

Now let’s look for a moment at the comments made on this passage in the SDA Bible Commentary, Vol. 4:

“Those who hold to the view that the ‘daily’ represents ‘paganism’ subtract 1290 from 1798 and arrive at the date 508…. Those who hold to the view that the ‘daily’ refers to the continual priestly ministry of Christ in the heavenly Sanctuary and to the true worship of Christ in the gospel age find no satisfactory explanation of this text. They believe that this is one of those Scripture passages on which future study will shed further light.” 4 BC 881.

Could it be, then, that this prophecy is in days instead of years? This would not contradict the statement that there would be time prophecies (such as in Dan. 12:7 – “time, times and half a time”) no longer. It is simply in real, literal days, and it applies to the cleansed, end-time people who will fulfill the prophecy in days instead of years, as did Ezekiel and Jesus. But again, when is the starting point? Let’s consider these statements from Ellen White:

By the decree enforcing the institution of the papacy in violation of the law of God, our nation will disconnect herself fully from righteousness. When Protestantism shall stretch her hand across the gulf to grasp the hand of the Roman power, when she shall reach over the abyss to clasp hands with spiritualism, when under the influence of this three-fold union, our country shall repudiate every principle of its constitution…and shall make provision for the propagation of papal falsehoods and delusions, then we may know that the time has come for the marvelous working of Satan and that the end is near.” 5 T. 451.

As the approach of the Roman armies were a sign to the disciples of the impending destruction of Jerusalem, so may this apostasy be the sign to us that the limit of God’s forbearance is reached, that the measure of our nation’s iniquity is full, and that the angel of mercy is about to take her flight, never to return.” Ibid.

“The time is not far distant when, like the early disciples, we shall be forced to seek a refuge in desolate and solitary places. As the siege of Jerusalem by the Roman armies was the signal for flight to the Judean Christians, so the assumption of power on the part of this nation, in the decree enforcing the papal Sabbath, will be a warning to us. It will then be time to leave the large cities, preparatory to leaving the smaller ones for retired homes in secluded places among the mountains.” 5 T 464, 5.

So we now know what event is at the beginning of this prophecy! It is the national Sunday Law. But are there any clues that would tell us what event is at the end of the 1290 days, or the 1335 days? First, let’s notice Dan. 11:44:

“But reports from the east and the north will alarm him, and he will set out in a great rage to destroy and annihilate many. He will pitch his royal tents between the seas at the beautiful holy mountain. Yet he will come to his end, and no one will help him.”

The “he” mentioned here is the king of the north (v. 40), who is, by most Adventist expositors, believed to be the Papacy (4 BC 875). Notice this quotation by Ellen White:

“Soon the scenes of trouble spoken of in the prophecies will take place. The prophecy in the 11th of Daniel has nearly reached its complete fulfillment. Much of the history that has taken place in the fulfillment of this prophecy will be repeated. In the 30th verse a power is spoken of that shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant. And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.’ [Quote continues from Dan. 11:30-36.]” Ltr. 103, 1904 (First published in R&H, 7/8/1976).

As we have already seen, the abomination of desolation for the last generation will be the Sunday law, and the “they” spoken of will be the combined forces of the Papacy and apostate Protestantism. But the important point is that he will come to his end (Dan. 11:44)! And then notice what happens next:

At that time Michael, the great Prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress (trouble – KJV) such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered. Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness like the stars for ever and ever.” Dan. 12:1-3.

So the reign of the Papacy will come to its end at the close of probation when Michael stands up and the time of trouble begins. Thus, I believe that the 1290-day period here concludes the reign of the Papacy when Michael stands up, just as the 1260 years of Papal supremacy ended in 1798 when the Pope was taken captive. (see Dan. 12:5-7). But we still need to know what significance the 1335 days has in this context:

“As for you [Daniel], go your way till the end. You will rest, and then at the end of the days you will rise to receive your allotted inheritance.” V. 13.

Obviously, this is talking about the resurrection, and Daniel’s participation in it. But there are two resurrections mentioned in the Bible – #1 - the special resurrection (Matt. 26:64; Rev. 1:7; Dan. 12:2) during the 7th plague (compare Rev. 16:17-21 with GC 637), and #2 - the general resurrection of all the righteous, or “first resurrection.” (1 Thess. 4:13-18: Rev. 20:4-6). The special resurrection is described by Ellen White in GC 636, 637 and EW 285, 286:

It is at midnight that God manifests His power for the deliverance of His people…. In the midst of the angry heavens is one clear space of indescribable glory, whence comes the voice of God like the sound of many waters, saying, ‘IT IS DONE.’ That voice shakes the heavens and the earth…. Graves are opened, and ‘many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth…awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.’ All who have died in the faith of the third angel’s message come forth from the tomb glorified, to hear God’s covenant of peace with those who have kept His law. ‘They also which pierced Him,’ those that mocked and derided Christ’s dying agonies, and the most violent opposers of His truth and His people, are raised to behold Him in His glory, and to see the honor placed upon the loyal and obedient.” GC 636, 637.

“It was at midnight that God chose to deliver His people…. And as God spoke the day and the hour of Jesus’ coming…. The saints shouted, ‘Glory! Hallelujah!’ Their countenances were lighted up with the glory of God, and they shone with glory as did the face of Moses when he came down from Sinai…. And when THE NEVER-ENDING BLESSING was pronounced on those who had honored God in keeping His Sabbath holy, there was a mighty shout of victory over the beast and over his image. Then commenced the jubilee, when the land should rest…. Soon appeared the great white cloud, upon which sat the Son of Man.” EW 285, 286.

Notice the things that occur at the special resurrection:

The voice of God speaks, “It is done.”

All who have died in the faith of the 3rd angel’s message come forth glorified.

God speaks the day and hour of His coming.

The never-ending blessing is pronounced.

Victory over the beast and his image is complete.

The jubilee begins, when the land shall rest.

But the resurrection of all the righteous comes at the last, or 7th trumpet as Jesus descends to earth in power and great glory:

“For the Lord Himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.” 1 Thess. 4:16.

“At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory. And He will send His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.” Matt. 24:30, 31.

“Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed – in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.” 1 Cor. 15:51, 52.

The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: ‘The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign for ever and ever…. We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty…because you have taken your great power and have begun to reign. The nations were angry; and your wrath has come. The time has come for judging the dead and for rewarding your servants the prophets and your saints and those who reverence your name,..and for destroying those who destroy the earth.” Rev. 11:15-18.

When the 7th angel sounds, ‘the kingdoms of this world…become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of His Christ.” 7 BC 881.

“I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge…. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years…. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy are those who have a part in the first resurrection.” Rev. 20:4-6.

Notice that the first resurrection is called “the time for rewarding the prophets”, and those who are resurrected are called “blessed,” which is the same word spoken to Daniel in Dan. 12:12, “Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the end of the 1335 days.” But this blessing is FIRST placed upon the waiting saints and those who are resurrected in the SPECIAL resurrection, as seen above in the quotation from EW, p. 285, 286. This should answer the questions of any who wonder if the 1335 day prophecy will give us the exact time of Jesus’ appearing. It does not, for it simply takes us up to the time when God announces the day and hour;  the exact time of His coming will not be known until then.

Since we will not know the day or the hour of Christ’s coming until the voice of God announces it at the special resurrection, and since the context of the 1335 prophecy especially applies to those who have lived through the time of trouble after the passing of the Sunday law and will be alive when the special resurrection takes place, I believe that the 1335 days ends at the special resurrection. This is when the captivity of God’s people is turned, they are blessed and glorified, they are forever free from the devil and his assaults, the wicked are forced to behold their deliverance, and the time when the jubilee begins. It seems that the general resurrection is simply a continuation and culmination of what has already happened to the living saints and the saints who have been resurrected at the special resurrection.

Whether Daniel and other prophets of eschatological importance, such as John the Revelator, will be rewarded by being among those who are resurrected at the special resurrection, we are not told. Ellen White, of course, will be at least one prophet who will be rewarded by being a member of that special group. The most important thing, however, is that this prophecy is designed to comfort and encourage God’s remnant by revealing to us that the time of our deliverance is near, and to give us a relevant message from Scripture that will be present truth for our time.

Beloved, every major revival in history has been based on a time prophecy which was recognized and acted upon by God’s people of that generation. The deliverance of Israel from Egypt, the seventy years of captivity, the coming of the Messiah, the 490 years of Israel’s probation, the “time of the end” after the 1260 years of Papal persecution, the 2300 day/year prophecy ending in 1844 – all were given impetus by the recognition of the fulfillment of a time prophecy.

“Whenever a major epoch of event of prophecy is reached, always there are reverent students whose minds are led by the Spirit of God to specific study and recognition of the fulfillment. This is ever contemporaneous with the event.” L. E. Froom: The Prophetic Faith of our Fathers, Vol. III, p. 9.

When the time shall come, in the providence of God, for the world to be tested upon the truth for that time, minds will be exercised by His Spirit to search the Scriptures, even with fasting and with prayer, until link after link is searched out and united in a perfect chain. Every fact which immediately concerns the salvation of souls will be made so clear that none need err or walk in darkness….

“Those who lived in past generations were accountable for the light which was permitted to shine upon them…. But they did not understand the truths which we do. They were not responsible for the light which they did not have. They had the Bible, as we have; but the time for the unfolding of special truth in relation to the closing scenes of this earth’s history is during the last generations that shall live upon the earth.” 2 T. 692, 693.

Time is very important to God. He has an “appointed time” for everything. The whole point of the Sabbath issue is that it is His “appointed time” for meeting with His people. Anything else becomes treason, because it means that we don’t care enough about His appointed times to be there to meet with our God. So it is with the “appointed time” of His prophecies. His reveals the special times of His workings with mankind that call attention to what He is doing with and for us.

A time appointed…. Mo’ed, a common Hebrew word, was applied to Israel’s appointed meetings with God…The word was used both for the time of meeting (Hos. 12:9) and for the place of meeting (Ps. 74:8)…. ‘The time of the end’ is an appointed time in God’s program of events.” 7 BC 875.

“Come near me and listen to this: ‘From the first announcement I have not spoken in secret; at the time it happens, I am there.’” Isa. 48:16.

The day of your watchmen has come, the day God visits you.” Micah 7:4.

God’s appointed times are vital! They are a matter of life and death. How sadly Jesus said to the people of His day, “You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?” Lu. 12:56. “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes…. Because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.” Lu. 19:42-44.

“Now, brothers, if I come to you…what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction? Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the flute or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes? Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle?” 1 Cor. 14:6-8.

This text is making a direct reference to the function of the trumpets which were used to direct the camp of Israel while they were in the wilderness, as found in Num. 10:1-10. The trumpets, blown by the Levites, were vital to the management of the camp, and all were instructed to understand their meanings and follow their commands.

The sound of each trumpet summoned Israel to meet with God.” PP 339.

These trumpets gave specific sounds which the people understood, and directed their movements accordingly…. None who gave attention were left in ignorance of what they were to do. If any failed to comply with the requirements of the Lord…they were punished with death…. For they would prove themselves willingly ignorant…. If they did not know the will of God concerning them, it was their fault.” 1 T. 651.

As I have attempted to point out, the time prophecy of the 1290/1335 days in Dan. 12:11-13 is a prophecy especially for God’s people of the final generation. It has not been clearly understood in prior times because it was not yet relevant. Time prophecies are vitally relevant mainly for those to whom they apply. When prophecies reach their fulfillment, they become present truth. They are designed by God to arrest the attention of His people to what He requires them to do, and to give them courage to endure the trials that attend the giving of their message.

“Everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort.” 1 Cor. 14:3.

But throughout history, those who bear a prophetic message have not been received graciously and thankfully by all who hear their warnings. Notice these texts which outline the journey of those who bear a prophetic call to their generation:

The days of punishment are coming, the days of reckoning are at hand. Let Israel know this. Because your sins are so many and your hostility so great, the prophet is considered a fool, the inspired man a maniac. The prophet, along with my God, is the watchman over Ephraim, yet snares await him on all his paths, and hostility in the house of his God.” Hos. 9:7, 8.

But speak, we must. As Seventh-day Adventists, we have a message of warning to give to the world. In a special way, we have been called to be watchmen on the walls of Zion. But what if we don’t hear the trumpets blowing and know what they mean? How can we give the trumpet a certain sound if we ourselves do not understand? Could it be that we are looking more to the world and to other churches  for the interpretation of our times, and thus not discerning that our “appointed time” has come in prophetic history?

If ever God’s watchmen needed to be on their guard, it is now…. The trumpet must give a certain sound…. The whole earth will be lightened with the glory of God, but those only will recognize the light who have sought a knowledge of the difference between holiness and sin.” UL 365.

Unless we understand the importance of the moments that are swiftly passing into eternity, and make ready to stand in the great day of God, we shall be unfaithful stewards. The watchman is to know the time of night. Everything is clothed with a solemnity that all who believe the truth for this time should realize. They should act in reference to the day of God. The judgments of God are about to fall upon the world, and we need to be preparing for that great day.” 6 T 407.

The perils of the last days are upon us, and we are to warn the people of the danger they are in…. If our people realized the nearness of the events portrayed in the Revelation, a reformation would be wrought in our churches, and many more would believe the message. We have no time to lose. God calls upon us to watch for souls as they which must give an account.” TM 118.

Dear Friends, when the Israelites came up to the land of Canaan the first time, their faith faltered, and they refused to go forward as God had commanded them. Thus, they had to spend another 40 years in the wilderness. Our church, also, came up to the Sunday law movement in the early 1900’s. But our people were unable to accept the vital message of righteousness by faith, and thus we were unprepared to give the final warning from cleansed hearts and with Latter Rain power.

But God gave His ancient people a second chance, and as they came up to conquer Jericho, God commanded them to do a strange thing. The priests were to lead the people around the city once each day for seven days, each day bearing the ark of God and blowing trumpets. But nothing happened. If they had stopped on the sixth day, all their marching and trumpet blowing would have availed nothing. But on the seventh day, they marched around the walls of Jericho seven times blowing trumpets each time. Then they gave a loud shout – and the walls of Jericho came down!

I believe this to be a fit representation of our Seventh-day Adventist journey. We have been preaching the three angels’ messages for many years, and the walls have not yet come down. But while the seven trumpets of Revelation are now blowing and the people of the world are being awakened, we need to interpret these messages from God rightly, and give the Loud Cry under the power of the Latter Rain – and the walls of Satan’s kingdom will come down, and we can go into the heavenly Canaan!

Isn’t it high time that the sleeping virgins awake and trim their lamps and prepare to give the Loud Cry to our neighbors – and to the world? May God bless us as we make preparation to meet the Bridegroom with ready, open, and pure hearts to receive Him!
